Berkeley Lab is looking for an Experienced Technical Manager to play a major role in the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U), a large-scale Department of Energy (DOE) project to upgrade the laboratory's flagship particle accelerator. LBNL also leads or supports a variety of other significant scientific projects through the Engineering Division's matrixed structure. The ALS-U Integration and InstallationTechnical Project Manager will lead the design, installation and integration team to complete all necessary infrastructure and facilities in support of the accelerator, including AC power, cooling water, the cable plant and all seismic and support structures. This task is further challenged by the tight constraints of working in an existing facility and the limited irregular spaces of the landmark building that houses the accelerator. The position provides direct technical guidance and day-to-day management of a medium-size engineering team (10 to 15 employees) and Cost Account Managers that will lead the construction/installation efforts for ALS-U. This entails interfacing with cross functional design and construction teams of up to 300 people and the responsibility for the oversight of major subcontracts affecting critical path activities.

The role demands a highly proactive and experienced technical leader with knowledge of accelerators or large-scale R&D projects, adept at managing project phases and risks, and capable of leading medium to large engineering teams to ensure successful project outcomes. As such, experience working on particle accelerators, with scientific equipment, and familiarity to work in the cross functional area between engineering, physics and operations is highly desired.


What You Will Do:Lead with Impact

• Take charge of the ALS-U Facilities and Integration Sub-Project, guiding it through all phases to deliver on scope, schedule, and budget. Remove roadblocks and facilitate timely project decisions based on a strong technical background.
• Manage and mentor a talented engineering team of 10-15, fostering their growth while collaborating with mechanical, electrical, and logistics leads.
• Build bridges between scientists, engineers, technicians, and external contractors, integrating with all project stakeholders, ensuring seamless communication and alignment with DOE and Lab safety standards.
• Oversee Logistic group responsible for storage, staging, and inventory of all ALS-U technical equipment. Project Management, Planning and Execution
  • Refine and lead the execution of detailed project schedules for the Facility Integration and Installation system, ensuring alignment with project objectives and critical path.
  • Maintain and update the performance baseline consisting of scope, schedule, and cost, leveraging Earned Value Management (EVM) to monitor performance.
  • Deliver timely reports that meet DOE 413.3b requirements for construction projects.
  • Manage daily activities of the Removal and Installation (R&I) system within the ALS-U project. Innovate and Integrate
    • Partner with R&I lead engineers to develop integration testing plans and shutdown schedules, ensuring flawless hardware hand-off to beam commissioning.
    • Tackle complex challenges with creative solutions, aligning with engineering best practices and Lab goals.
    • Lead technical reviews and presentations that showcase your team's progress and ingenuity.Ensure Excellence
      • Champion safety, quality, and compliance in collaboration with Environment, Health & Safety and senior management team members
      • Oversee installations to meet rigorous performance standards, ensuring robust configuration management and quality processes.
      • Execute and oversee manufacturing and quality procedures, including non-conformance reporting and engineering change orders.
        
        
        
        What is Required:
        • Education & Experience: Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) or equivalent in Physics, Engineering, or a related field, plus 10+ years of experience with particle accelerators, beamlines, detectors, or similar large-scale scientific/industrial projects.
        • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of accelerators or large R&D projects, with hands-on skills in cost estimation, scheduling, and progress tracking.
        • Leadership: Proven experience managing technical teams, with a successful track record networking across disciplines and engaging diverse stakeholders.
        • Communication: Strong written and oral skills, evidenced by technical publications or project documentation.
        • Project Mastery: Familiarity with project management tools and methods (e.g., EVMS, Primavera P6 is a plus).
        • Collaboration: Ability to thrive in a matrixed environment, collaborating effectively with engineering and scientific teams, external partners, and senior management.
          
          Desired Qualifications:
          • Hands-on experience with engineering tools and workflows.
          • Expertise in systems engineering, QA, or Project Lifecycle Management.
          • A track record with DOE 413.3b projects.
          • Strong reputation and network within the national and international scientific community in particle accelerators, beamlines, detectors, or large-scale scientific projects.
          • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. Notes:
            • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
            • This position is expected to pay $260,000 to $320,000, which fits within the full salary range of $205,020 to $345,972 for the Facilities Technical Manager 3 job classification. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
